Xi writes: "This is what is called 'The Ultimate of Nothingness (Wuji) and yet the Supreme Ultimate (Taiji).' It is the fundamental substance (Benti) that, through motion, generates Yang, and through stillness, generates Yin. However, it does not exist apart from Yin and Yang; rather, its substance is indicated within them."

[Referring to the diagram:] This circle 〇represents that which moves and becomes Yang, and is still and becomes Yin. The central circle 〇 is its fundamental substance. [The left side] represents the movement of Yang — the function (yong) of the Supreme Ultimate by which it operates. [The right side] represents the stillness of Yin — the substance (ti) of the Supreme Ultimate by which it establishes itself.
