I started to explore the essence of the painting of snow in the mist and rain on the Liujiang River in Guangxi province. The mountains have exquisite forms and the water is running down, making beautiful sound like that of a song. Green trees full of energy and rocks all in grotesque shapes. The waterfall of Mount Emei pours down the sheer cliff. Strangely, its water dried out. Ink was carried to the top of the mountain and poured down from there, forming waterfalls of ink. Later, I went to Mount Mengding. It’s a mountain of tea trees with heavy fogs like waves in the sea. The shadows of the tree reflect the color of the creek. Fragrant breeze comes from orchids and scented herbs. The shape of the mountain is formed, resembling that of the sea. But where does the meaning of snow come from? Arriving at Wutai Mountain, I sit near the cliff of the peak, I then realized: snow is like the movement of waves in the river, up and down with peaks and valleys; and when the mountain becomes quiet, the peaks disappear. Snow is the image of the micro waves of the universe. On top of the Wutai Mountain, I found out the meaning of the painting of snow. I went to the Kunming Lake in the Summer Palace when I came back to Beijing. The vast lake is not deep, but finally completed its natural form. The painting of snow comes from my experiences in five mountains and in three provinces, from water to mountains, and from mountains to snow. I felt that I’m in the perfect state, approaching that of Wang Wei.

The depiction of snow scenes is ranked as superior among landscape paintings. It can evoke the essence of nature and acknowledge the extraordinary mastery of the brush. A small painting represents the vast landscape of endless mountain ranges. It's like the infinite space crystallized into a small piece of paper presented in front of your eyes. The four seasons appear naturally under the tip of the brush. Mountains are on the waterside and winding paths are endless. The main peak is the highest and subordinate mountains with a sense of movement. Several trees form a small forest, and tree branches all natural and organic. The mountain and the cliff are unified as one, water falls down from the top, not running in different directions. The ferry is a quiet place with only a few people scattered around. The long paddle on the boat is upright, the boatman nowhere to be found. Distant mountains and the floating clouds are merged together, while the light and color of faraway water and sky interact and reflect one another. Distant views blocked by mists and deep caves hidden by clouds, sometimes up and sometimes down, as if transcendent and intangible. Roofs and terraces are partially seen, covered by flowers bushes and mountain rocks. The pillars supporting thatched cottages and pavilions are only partially visible. The mountain has eight different views and rocks are seen from three different angles. On top of the pine trees are clouds in the shape of the auspicious lingzhi mushroom. The painting of snow scenes embraces all things in the universe. When the painting is finished and the brush stopped, you realize the infinity of time and the desire to explore its profound mystery. The nature of both space and time is hidden in the snow.
