INK studio will present a careful selection of new works by Li Jin, Wang Dongling, and Zheng Chongbin at Booth C3 of West Bund Art & Design (West Bund Art Center, 2555 Longteng Avenue, Shanghai), November 9-13, 2016. All three are among the most accomplished and celebrated contemporary ink artists and have recently made career-defining creative breakthroughs. It is at this exciting moment that INK studio is bringing to Shanghai their respective latest series. As part of the VIP Program of West Bund, INK studio will also host a panel discussion with Li, Wang, Zheng, and Zhang Jianjun entitled “Four Takes on the 1980’s” on November 10, 2016.

Li Jin (b. 1958, Tianjin) is beloved and widely collected in China and abroad for his lush depictions of banquets and sensual pleasures. Having explored color washes for two decades, he has translated them into a masterful control of tonality—the “five colors of ink”—in a new series of monochrome paintings in the expressionistic daxieyi manner. Through the ink medium’s inherent sensitivity and ambiguity, they evoke the nuances of human existence and raise profound questions about self-representation and subjectivity. Inaugurating a new phase in his career, the paintings were debuted in Li’s recent solo exhibition Being at INK studio (May-August, 2016). Following The Sensory Life of the Mass, Li Jin’s large-scale retrospective at the Long Museum (September-October, 2015), INK studio is excited to present his new color andmonochrome paintings in Shanghai alongside previously-unseen works from his sojourns in Tibet in the 1990’s.

Wang Dongling (b. 1937, Jiangsu Province) is China’s most renowned calligrapher. Over six decades, he has consistently redefined Chinese calligraphy by experimenting with scale, performance, and materiality. INK studio will present Chaos Script, Wang’s latest and most radical innovation. Here he breaks away completely from the implied grid of traditional calligraphy, interweaving characters and entire columns into an amorphous field. By pushing writing to the brink of legibility, Wang has created a unique kind of aesthetic experience and forged a new connection between Chinese calligraphy and the world. Chaos Script is the subject of Wang’s concurrent solo exhibitions Writing Chaos at INK studio (through November 20, 2016) and Between Heaven and Heart at the Imperial Ancestral Temple (November 6-14, 2016). During the past year, Wang has given live performances of Chaos Script at the Brooklyn Museum, British Museum, Auckland Art Gallery, and Vancouver Art Museum to widespread acclaim.

Zheng Chongbin’s(b. 1961, Shanghai) distinctive paintings make the vitality of matter perceptible by realizing nature’s processes in the interactions of ink, acrylic, paper, and light. His profile has risen dramatically in recent years, with solo shows at INK studio (May-September 2015), Sotheby’s S|2 Hong Kong (April-May, 2016), and the Orange County Museum of Art (OCMA) (August 6-December 4, 2016), and major acquisitions by the Daimler Art Collection, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, M+, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and OCMA. He showed his environmental video installation in a Collateral Event of the 2015 Venice Biennale. He is one of 11 Highlighted Artists of the 2016 Shanghai Biennale (November 11, 2016-March 12, 2017), which features a new version of Wall of Skies, a room-sized light-and-space installation created for his eponymous 2015 solo exhibition at INK studio. At West Bund, INK studio will present Zheng’s latest paintings.
