My sister and I were very close in age, and so, although we were great friends, we were also very competitive. Once we were smoking weed together when we were teenagers and I played a mean trick on her. She had the munchies, and I made her a sandwich. I told her it was liverwurst, but it was actually canned dog food. She didn't notice and ate it right up. I laughed and laughed and she thought it was just because I was so high. It didn't make her sick, but I always remembered that moment of cruelty and laughing at her expense, and that memory made ME feel sick to think I found pleasure in such a thing. She recently passed away. She had a life that was as hard and bitter as my own life has been successful and rewarding. It know it's not my fault, but still, knowing that I did something so petty and mean makes me feel like an asshole. I never did tell her I was sorry for what I'd done. Now I have to live with this small act of unkindness on my shoulders forever.
