INK studio is pleased to present the works of Zheng Chongbin at The Armory Show in March 2016 in New York, including a brand-new series of paintings and the U.S. debut of his acclaimed environmental video installation, Chimeric Landscape (2015), previously seen at INK studio and the European Cultural Centre, Venice. This presentation comes at a particularly exciting moment for the artist, who has recently been recognized with acquisitions by such major international collections as the Daimler Art Collection, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and M+. A participant in the 2014 Armory Show, INK studio will return to the fair this year as the only China-based gallery.

Throughout his career of three decades, Zheng Chongbin (b. 1961, Shanghai) has held the classical Chinese ink tradition and Western pictorial abstraction in productive tension. Systematically exploring and deconstructing their conventions and constituents-figure, texture, space, geometry, gesture, materiality-he has developed a distinctive body of work that makes the vitality of matter directly perceptible, not picturing but instantiating nature's entropic processes and fractal structures in the interactions of ink, acrylic, paper, and light. His works bridge the modernist concerns with the spiritual in abstraction and the post-modern deconstruction of light and space perception with a Daoist phenomenology of "resonance" or qiyun.

Zheng Chongbin has extended his meditations on painting's ontology and phenomenology into the dimensions of space and time. Chimeric Landscape presents entropic processes and emergent order in a stream of homologous imagery spanning temporal and physical scales-topological variations in still and turbulent water, the explosion and diffusion of ink on paper, the etching of river ways through a landmass. As images and sounds morph into each other, as they arise from and dissipate into blankness, time itself becomes textured and vital. Just as his paintings both suggest and resist perspective, Chimeric Landscape releases the viewer into the infinite flux of the world only to make it perceptible as form.

Zheng Chongbin lives and works in San Francisco and Shanghai. His works may be found in the collections, among others, of M+, Hong Kong; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the British Museum, London; the Asian Art Museum, San Francisco; and in the Daimler Art Collection, Berlin; the DSL Collection, France; and the Marina Bay Sands, Singapore. He is the subject of a documentary film, The Enduring Passion of Ink, and an in-depth monograph, Zheng Chongbin: Impulse, Matter, Form, edited by Britta Erickson and distributed by D.A.P. in the United States.

INK studio is a Beijing-based gallery and experimental art space devoted to documenting and responding to new and exciting developments in the media of ink painting currently emanating from China. Over the past decades, a group of important artists have been highly active in researching and developing the immense contemporary creative possibilities of the millennia-old language of paper, brush, and ink. Their work is increasingly attracting international critical attention. INK studio's mission is to present the best of this work to the public in a closely curated exhibition program supported by in-depth critical analysis, scholarly exchange, and bilingual publishing in Chinese and English.
